About the Badass

Kate Flowers is a badass teacher leader and writer who lives in San Jose, California. Kate, a National Board Certified English Teacher, has been teaching for twenty years, and is thrilled to be a 2016-2018 Heinemann Fellow. For the past five years, she has taught 9th and 12th grade English to brave, bold, brilliant teens at Santa Clara High School. Kate also serves as an Associate Director of the San Jose Area Writing Project based at San Jose State University and directed by her friend, mentor, and lifelong badass, Dr. Jonathan Lovell, lovingly referred to as ProLo by Kate’s fourth period English 9 Honors students, whom he works with every Thursday.

SJAWP Teacher Consultant Marty Brandt, Associate Director Kate Flowers, and Director Dr. Jonathan Lovell celebrate their first roundtable presentation at the 2015 NWP Annual Meeting in Minneapolis on November 19, 2015.

Kate writes with an amazing group of teachers, including her small writing group, The SJAWP Compadres–Jonathan Lovell and Marty Brandt.

Kate invites you to explore the many offerings of the San Jose Area Writing Project at sjawp.org. Our Saturday Seminars and Summer Programs empower teachers to write, lead, and teach with heart. Come join us!

Kate delights in her two badass sons, Drew, 21 and Elijah, 15, as well as her two standard poodles, Maggie and Dexter, who are not the least bit badass.
